Effects of Background Information and Avatars in Virtual Campus on the Sense of Belonging to the University -- Case of Sendagaya Campus of Tsuda University --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In 2020, due to the global pandemic of the novel coronavirus(COVID-19) infection, most university students have largely lost opportunities to visit campuses and the development of a sense of belonging to the university was hindered.
As a countermeasure to this problem, remote online classes, events and opportunities for student life using virtual spaces are beginning to be provided.
This paper reports results of our investigation on the effects of virtual space information (backgrounds and avatars) on the students' attachment to and impression of their university campus and community.
In fact, we conducted an experiment in which university students interacted with two types of virtual spaces and two types of avatars, and collected responses to questionnaires about spatial evaluation, avatar effects, place attachment, and sense of community.
The results showed that the virtual space information improved their sense of belonging to the university.
