In this paper, we look back to the early researches of adaptive beamforming for sound acquisition in the 1980s and 90s, after reception of the IEICE achievement award for FY2019. Our studies established a research field named ``Adaptive microphone array,'' which is an effective noise reduction approach based on directivity control introducing adaptive signal processing. We solved important problems caused by very wide-band signal, sensor errors and reverberation. These technologies came out of fashion for over 10 years, however, have seen a revival trough smart speaker, where they became a useful tool for sound acquisition. |
