This study examined the estimation of subjects' emotion from EEG data using multi-dimensional CNN. We used DEAP dataset which includes 32ch EEG data with subjective information. Two classes, “High” and “Low” are assigned to each Valence and Arousal emotion. As a pre-processing, wavelet transformation was adopted to each channel of EEG data for each subject, and the results were applied to electrode map represented in 2D lattice manner, which reflects spatial arrangement of electrodes on the skin of the brain. By such a procedure, 4D data representation, namely (electrode-x, electrode-y, time, frequency), were obtained, and we provided 3D data of (x, y, time) with multiple frequency bands into 3D-CNN simultaneously.
Output of the network represents the emotion of the subject represented by binarized one-hot vector. As the result of learning, we obtained 60% and 64.5% of precisions for Valence and Arousal emotions, respectively, therefore the effectiveness of our approach was confirmed. |
