In order to understand the structure of large and complex neural networks in the brain, it is important to find the "cores" of the network where brain regions strongly interact with each other. In order to identify the cores, it is important to consider not only the local structure of the network but also the global structure. However, it has been impossible to identify the cores accurately by considering the global structure, because the computational complexity explodes exponentially with the increase in the number of nodes. In this study, we propose a new method to exactly identify cores taking account of global structure in a realistic computational time. In the proposed method, a core is defined as a network that has stronger interactions than the sub-networks that contain it. The strength of the interactions is quantified by the weight of the minimum cut of the sub-network. In the proposed method, cores are searched in a hierarchical manner, which greatly reduces the search space and allows the search to be done in polynomial time. We used the proposed method to analyze human resting state fMRI data in order to search for core brain regions in the functional network of the whole brain. We found that the brain regions included in the cores with strong interactions were similar across subjects, and were particularly located in the posterior part of the cerebral cortex. |
