Optical Characteristics of Standard Cladding Multi-core Fiber with Multi Connection

(in English) A space division multiplexing (SDM) transmission technique has been investigated to overcome the theoretical limitation of transmission capacity in a standard single-mode fiber (SMF). In particular, a 125-um cladding multi-core fiber (MCF) is attractive for early deployment of the SDM system since it is expected to have similarly high mechanical reliability as the existing SMF with the standard cladding diameter and can be applied to conventional optical cable structures. In addition, a step-index (SI) profile MCF (SI-MCF) can be expected to have high productivity since it has a relatively simple refractive index profile similar to the SMFs widely used in the current access and metro networks. In this paper, we evaluate the insertion loss and core-to-core crosstalk characteristics of SI type 4-core fibers (SI-4CFs) with multi connection using installed SI-4CF optical cables toward the practical deployment.
