Effect of Absorption Anisotropy in the UV Region on the Shutter Properties of Twisted Nematic Liquid Crystal Devices

(in English) A transparent liquid crystal display using a twisted nematic (TN) cell , a UV light polarizers which is transparent in a visible light and a polarized light-emitting films have been proposed. TN cell is applied to this display as a UV shutter. However, physical properties of the LC material for the UV light have not been reported and electro-optical properties in a UV light region has not been clarified. In this study, TN cells using LCs with and without UV absorption were prepared and electro-optical properties were measured with a UV-LED (max: 365 nm). Two alignment geometries of the polarizer and LC orientation were adopted with a consideration of the UV absorbance of LC materials. Moreover, the electro-optical curve was calculated by theoretically including an absorption anisotropy of the LC material and calculated results were compared with the measured one. Finally, absorption coefficiencies of short and long LC axis and refractive index anisotropy were successfully clarified at 365 nm.
