A Study of Pilot Assignment Optimization Based on Statistical Beam Selection for Large Multi-User MIMO

(in English) We propose a novel pilot assignment optimization scheme based on statistical beam selection for significant pilot overhead reduction in large multi-user multi-input multi-output (MU-MIMO) systems. In the uplink large MU-MIMO scenarios, accurate channel estimation plays a vital role in separating the multiplexed signals at the receiver. However, the use of orthogonal pilots induces an increase of channel acquisition overhead with the increase in the number of simultaneously connected user terminals, resulting in the reduced data transmission efficiency. To address this issue, we focus on the pseudo-sparsity of beam-domain channels, which is caused by the limited angler spread of received signals when the receive fully-digital beamforming is used at the base station (BS). When the long-term channel statistics are available at the BS, the selection criterion for statistical beams to be used for channel estimation can be designed based on the sparsity. By leveraging the signal space consists of non-selected beams, the same pilots can be assigned to spatially separated user terminals while maintaining high channel estimation accuracy. Computer simulations demonstrate the validity of our proposed method in
terms of mean square error (MSE) performance in large multi-user MIMO systems with short non-orthogonal pilots.
