Shape design of THz liquid crystal devices and application to metamaterials

(in English) Today, it is an urgent issue to develop active devices that control the terahertz wave propagation in order to further expand the terahertz wave application. In this study, we attempt to design the shape of a metamaterial device which combines an electromagnetic metamaterial, which has unit structures of sub-wavelengths infinitely, and a liquid crystal with the optical anisotropy. In order to exceed the polarization conversion performance of existing devices, the shape optimization is performed using the topology optimization and the FDTD simulation. The design ability of the proposed design method is discussed by comparison with the conventional structure.
