Investigation of Operating Frequency of Low-Power Single-Flux-Quantum Circuits

(in English) To reduce the power consumption of single-flux-quantum circuits, it is an effective method to reduce the critical currents of the Josephson junctions or the bias voltage of the circuit. However, these increase the fluctuation of timing parameters, such as setup time and hold time. It causes a decrease in clock frequencies and stability of circuit operation. In this paper, we analyzed the timing parameters when either the critical currents or bias voltage, or both were lowered and clarified the trade-off between power consumption, operating frequency, and bit error rates. In the analysis on a full adder, we examined the operating frequencies, and estimated that the energy efficiency would be improved 7.20 times or 9.04 times, respectively, by lowering the critical currents or bias voltage to 1⁄16 of the conventional values. Further, higher operating frequencies with high energy efficiency were obtained by combining them when we targeted comparable power reduction.
