We propose a random number generator (RNG) using non-adiabatic quantum-flux-parametron (QFP) gates. The RNG is a simple QFP buffer chain to which offset input current is applied to control the probability of generating 1s and 0s. Whereas conventional RNGs generate pseudo-random numbers using deterministic algorithms, the proposed RNG utilizes thermal noises to obtain true random numbers. To reduce autocorrelation, we insert large inductors between adjacent buffers to weaken the back action from the following buffers to the first buffer, which generates random numbers, and set the first buffer to a non-adiabatic operation mode by increasing the critical current of JJs to make the buffer less sensitive to back action. Furthermore, we propose a multi-output random number generation scheme and evaluate the autocorrelation of all output sequences. We have designed and fabricated a non-adiabatic RNG using the AIST 10 kA/cm^2 Nb high-speed standard process (HSTP) and evaluated the quality of the generated random bit streams. We believe that QFP-based RNGs can be used for applications such as stochastic computing. |
