Evaluation of lively face from spatial frequency characteristics of facial images

(in English) The morphological characteristics of the face and the condition of the skin reportedly affect evaluations of facial attractiveness. In the present study, we evaluated whether the skin condition affects the degree to which women are perceived as “looking lively” by examining the spatial frequency characteristics of women’s facial images. Twenty female evaluators rated the facial images of 272 women aged 18 to 82 years using a 7-point scale, with 1 being "not appearing lively at all" and 7 being "looking very lively".
Tests of the correlation coefficient between the rating value of “a lively face” and each spatial frequency power value revealed a large number of significant power values. Multiple regression analysis was subsequently performed to determine characteristic power values. To visually understand what features the characteristic power values correspond to in the facial images, an inverse Fourier transform using a filter set to enhance or remove each power value was performed. Visual analysis of the resulting images indicated that skin elements of “bright and transparent,” “fresh and soft appearance” and “plump-looking cheeks” contribute greatly to a woman’s lively looking face.
The results of the present study suggest that the appearance of the skin may contribute to the evaluation of “a face that looks lively”.
