Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This study examined the relationship between the geographic distribution of Pokémon GO portals and the level of satisfaction and happiness of people living in each region. Niantic, Inc.’s PokéStop and Gym in Pokémon GO (hereinafter collectively referred to as “portals”) are based on the portals in the company’s location-based game Ingress. From Niantic, Inc., we received the latitude and longitude information for the portals in the area, including the Osaka Prefecture. Consequently, 53,533 portals in Osaka Prefecture were extracted. Kernel density estimation was performed to estimate the density of the portals. We conducted an online survey on life satisfaction and happiness among residents of the Osaka Prefecture (n = 1498). For the 12 items related to well-being, confirmatory factor analysis (four factors (i.e., dream factor, economic factor, pride factor, and future happiness factor) × three items (i.e., maximum likelihood method, Promax rotation)) was performed to confirm that there was no problem with the fit. The factor scores were calculated after the confirmation. Based on previous studies, it was assumed that the items related to life satisfaction had a four-factor structure (facilities, convenience, comfort, and convenience of transportation, having two items each); the average scores were then used in the analysis. In addition, based on the zip codes reported by the participants, we calculated the portal density for each area in which each study participant resided. The relationship between life satisfaction average scores, happiness factor scores, and portal density was examined using partial correlation analysis, the controlling variable being the resident population density of each participant’s area of residence. Although the results showed a clear relationship between life satisfaction and portal density, there was no association with subjective happiness.
