Relationship between Personality and Utterance Responses of Older Women in Daily Conversation at First Meeting

(in English) Daily conversation plays an important role in the development and maintaining of interpersonal relationships. Increasing opportunities for social interaction through daily conversation is known to reduce the risk of death and maintain cognitive function in older adults. Utterance response patterns in daily conversation are thought to vary according to individual personalities. It is thought that analysis of these relationships may provide insights into how to increase communication opportunities，such as finding compatible conversation partners or improving communication skills with older people. The present study investigated the relationship between older women's personalities and their utterance response patterns in daily conversation. Eight women aged 70 years or older who had never met each other before answered four existing questionnaires about their personalities， and participants recorded a 10-minute bilateral conversations. The analysis of the relationships between the utterance response patterns and the personality components obtained from the principal component analysis revealed that they were related to different personality components for each response category. These findings can be used to improve smooth communication skills with older women.
