Non-contact bolt loosening detection by remotely exciting a piezoelectric element bonded to a bolt

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Regular inspection of bolts is important for maintaining structures, and a simple inspection method is required. A non-contact inspection method is not only easy-to-use but also particularly useful for inspection in places where it is difficult to approach, such as high places. In this research, we propose a non-contact inspection method to measure the axial force of a bolt by remotely exciting a piezoelectric element and a coil embedded to the head of the bolt. Looseness of the bolt can be detected through magnetic coupling by simply bringing an inspection device close to the bolt. We made a prototype bolt and confirmed that the resonance frequency of the bolt, which changes due to the loosening of the bolt, can be measured remotely via coils.
