Processing cost of maintaining preverbal dependents
Shinnosuke Isono, Yuki Hirose (U Tokyo) TL2020-10
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In online comprehension of strictly head-final languages like Japanese, there can be a large processing demand at the head verb since multiple preverbal dependents have to be simultaneously retrieved from some distance. The present study investigates whether there is a mechanism that mitigates this demand by maintaining the mental representations of the dependents in working memory until the head verb is reached. In a Japanese self-paced reading experiment manipulating the number of preverbal dependents, readers were found to slow down in one region between the dependents and the verb when an adjunct is added. This suggests the presence of a maintenance mechanism that operates on an on-demand basis.
