Recently, with the introduction of Programming Protocol-independent Packet Processors (P4) to enable customized packet-level processing in an easy and unified way and its developments on not only software but a variety of hardware switchesand devices, the programmability on the data plane of communications networks attracts more attention and becomes more realistic. We previously proposed a scheme of early packet discarding on switches called Maximum Transmission Queue and Queue To Live (MTQ/QTL) for real-time application networks with a hard limit of the end-to-end delay time; but evaluated its
effectiveness only by simulation. In this report, we show a preliminary implementation of MTQ/QTL on a P4-enable software switch. Through the emulation-based experiments on Mininet emulator, we verify the internal behaviors and the effects of MTQ/QTL, which suggests the feasibility and usefulness of the data plane programming by P4. |
