Investigation of Preamble Design Appropriate for Random Access Achieving Multi-Packet Reception

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Random access for multi-packet reception is considered to be an promising technology component for the 5th generation mobile communication system and beyond for actualizing the massive machine-type communications (mMTC) and ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC). The system prepares multiple channel identifiers for signal separation of multiple user packet signals at the base station receiver and the user randomly selects the channel identifier to be used. When the multiple users select the same channel identifier, a packet loss occurs due to the collision of the channel identifier. To suppress this packet loss, the system needs to be prepare sufficient number of channel identifiers compared to the expected number of simultaneously transmitting users. The base station receiver performs user detection and channel estimation using the preamble sequences, each of which has a one-to-one relationship with the channel identifier. As the number of the channel identifiers prepared in the system, the computational complexity for the user detection and channel estimation becomes prohibitive. To address the problem, we propose a preamble sequence design appropriate for the random access achieving multi-packet reception. Assuming the single-carrier transmission based on the DFT-Spread OFDM, the proposed method constructs the preamble sequence by repetition of the basic Zadoff-Chu (ZC) sequence, which is shorter than the length of one DFT block, with multiplication of the orthogonal masking sequence. Computer simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method quantitatively.
