Tapping from an optical fiber link is a potential security risk in optical communication systems. Physical layer encryption utilizing physical property of light is a promising technique to make such tapping impossible. We focus on Y-00 quantum stream cipher utilizing multilevel optical modulation. Correct interception of the multilevel signal by an eavesdropper is disrupted by quantum (shot) noise in the cipher system. This paper reports phase-shift-keying Y-00 cipher realized by extremely high-order phase modulation and digital coherent technologies. Recent experimental demonstrations show that high security based on irreducible signal masking by shot noise and high transmission performances sufficient for a long-haul fiber link are simultaneously achieved. |
