Theoretical Study of Fiber Brillouin Scattering Using FDTD Method
Shiori Nozawa, Shiro Ryu (Meiji Univ.) OFT2020-26
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Brillouin scattering is known as a nonlinear phenomenon that occurs in an optical fiber. So far, we have measured the amplitude and phase characteristics of Brillouin scattered light using the coherent heterodyne detection technique, and have clarified that phase leaps are observed between wave packets that last for a certain period of time. In this paper, in order to confirm the above phenomenon theoretically, we report the results of the solution of the partial differential equation that describes Brillouin scattering using the FDTD method. The amplitude and phase characteristics of the light passing through the fiber and the Stokes light observed at the input end when Brillouin scattering was taken into account were obtained by simulation, and as a result of comparison with the experimental results, the existence of wave packets for Stokes light was revealed. Then, the corresponding phase jumps were observed at the beginning and end of the wave packet, confirming the agreement between the experimental and theoretical trends. From the results of this research, it is considered that the theoretical analysis dealt with in this paper is useful for studying the effect of Brillouin scattering on the optical communication system using the coherent heterodyne detection technique.
