A Study on Antenna Configuration and Beam Control for Feeder Link in HAPS System

(in English) High-Altitude Platform Station (HAPS), which provides communications services from the altitude of 20km by utilizing balloon, airplane, or airship, is attracting much attention as a new mobile communications platform realizing ultra-wide coverage area and disaster-resilient networks. It can provide mobile communications services directly to smartphones, which is commonly used in terrestrial mobile communications networks. HAPS communication system is composed of service links which provide communications between HAPS and cellular phones and a feeder link which establishes a communication between HAPS and a base station (gateway). HAPS flies in a constant range over the airspace to maintain the service area, and so it is constantly moving and changing its attitude. Therefore, it is essential for the feeder link antenna on HAPS to control the beam direction in order to maintain the link with the gateway. This paper proposes an antenna configuration and beamforming control for a feeder link antenna that is tolerant of the attitude change of HAPS, and evaluates it by simulation and experiment.
