We are developing a non-destructive inspection technique for STPG370 steel pipes using magnetostriction-based ultrasonic guided wave transmission/reception method. Since the STPG pipes are used with thermal insulator, the magnetization of the STPG pipe using the electromagnets with permalloy cores instead of the ferrite cores was tested in this study, to remotely magnetize the pipes and remain enough strong remnant field in the STPG pipes to generate guided waves on the pipe. Electromagnetic field simulations using JMAG to calculate the remnant field in the STPG pipe were investigated to estimate the longest distance to remain the magnetic field of 0.3 T with various aperture sizes of the permalloy cores. As a result, it was shown that a bias field of more than 0.3 T can be left in the STPG pipe at the distance of up to 5 mm. |
