A study of sound velocity profile acquisition method using Doppler shift

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Sound speed distribution, which is important to calculate sound propagation in the ocean, is currently estimated from a temperature profile obtained from an Expendable Bathy Thermograph (XBT) probe and a statistic salinity profile. In this calculation, as salinity is not measured value, sometimes it causes large error for estimation of sound propagation. The probe with salinity sensor is expensive, it is hard to cast it in so often like an XBT probe. In this study, authors suggest a new method for measuring sound velocity directly from a Doppler shift amount of a moving source. As the Doppler shift amount depends on the moving speed of the source and the sound speed around the source, it is possible to get the sound speed around the source from the Doppler shift acquired at a receiver if we know the source moving speed. The sound speed profile can be acquired according to the source falling like an XBT probe. Authors confirmed the proposed method by numerical calculation and a tank experiment. In a tank experiment, sound speed profile could be calculated from the Doppler shift. The difference between the sound speed acquired by the proposed method and that of conventional method is about 1 m/s and the movements of both profiles were similar.
