[Invited Talk] DOCOMO's Views and Recent Activities on 5G Evolution & 6G

(in English) A commercial service in fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication system launched in March 2020 at last by using 3.7 GHz, 4.5 GHz, and 28 GHz bands in Japan. The higher data-rate can be provided in especially the 28 GHz band where the wider bandwidth of 400 MHz is employed compared to the sub 6 GHz bands. On the other hand, towards further enhancement of 5G, that is to say, 5G evolution and 6G that aims to provide a commercial service in almost 2030, a variety of technical discussions have already been started domestically and internationally. In Japan, The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has been holding “Beyond 5G Promotion Strategy Roundtable” and the recommendations from the roundtable and MIC’s “Beyond 5G Promotion Strategy -Roadmap towards 6G-” has been released. In addition, DOCOMO has already released a white paper that describes (i) directions of evolution, (ii) requirements and use cases, and (iii) technological enhancement and study areas on 5G evolution and 6G in January, which has been updated in July 2020. In this invited talk, as DOCOMO’s views on 5G evolution and 6G, we introduce the outline of the white paper and DOCOMO’s recent activities in addition to technical issues for exploiting higher frequency bands such as millimeter-wave and terahertz bands.
