Differential Multi-Carrier Modulation Schemes for Severe Doubly-Selective Channels

(in English) This paper discusses differential multi-carrier (MC) modulation schemes on severe time and frequency selective channels, i.e., doubly-selective channels. For severe doubly-selective channels, differential MC modulation schemes have better transmission frequency efficiency than coherent MC modulation schemes, because coherent ones need frequent pilot-symbol insertion for their channel estimation. This paper discusses the following two differential MC modulation schemes: differential orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and differential multiple single carrier (MSC) modulation scheme. First, this paper discusses a generalized description of the differential MC modulation schemes. Next, this paper compares features of the two differential MC modulation schemes from the communication system's point of view. Finally, in order to improve transmission frequency efficiency for differential OFDM, this paper proposes a frame structure whose reference carrier phase differences between the subcarriers are identical to those of synchronization words.
