A Study on TDOA-based En-route Surveillance System Combined with AOA

(in English) An en-route surveillance system measures an aircraft position in flight and provides the position to air traffic control services.
As a conventional system, secondary surveillance radars (SSR) have been widely used.
Currently, a new system called Wide Area Multilateration (WAM), which estimates an aircraft position by Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA), has been installed or put in service to improve accuracy and update speed.
In addition to the better performance, another advantage of WAM is flexibility in coverage; the coverage can be easily extended by adding receivers.
However, this also leads to a drawback of WAM that the number of receivers and consequently maintenance cost tend to be large.
Therefore, technology to reduce the number of WAM receivers is needed.
From this background, the authors are investigating WAM aided by Angle of Arrival (AOA).
By combining AOA and TDOA, it is expected that the number of receivers is reduced while maintaining the localization performance.
In this technical report, a localization method combining TDOA and AOA is proposed.
A numerical simulation that examines the effectiveness of the proposed method is also reported.
