The polar codes, introduced by Arıkan, can achieve the channel capacity of discrete memoryless channels with low computational and spatial complexity. Conventionally, the transmitted bits sent over the channel for polar codes are chosen based on the mutual information criterion. Recently, Li et al. have proposed a new code, called hybrid RM-Polar code, for which the transmitted bits are chosen based on both the mutual information and the minimum Hamming distance. Since the rows with low weight are dropped during the selection process, hybrid RM-Polar code greatly improves the error performance of successive cancellation-list decoding. However, Li et al. considered only the weight of a single row and thus there is still room for further investigation in view of a combination of multiple rows. In this paper, we investigate the error rate performance of hybrid RM-Polar code based on the generalized Hamming weights. The simulation results show that the performance of the proposed method depends on the relation between the minimum Hamming distance and the mutual information of transmitted bits, and it is improved when they are well-balancedly selected. |
