A Study on Reference for Detection and Evaluation of Abnormal Foot Movement during Walking in Hemiplegic Subject Using Inertial Sensors

(in English) Abnormal foot movements seen in hemiplegic patients include drop foot and clubfoot, and if abnormal ankle joint movement occur, the risk of stumbles, falls and injuries increase. This study aimed to detect and evaluate abnormal foot movements during early stance phase of hemiplegic patients using inertial sensors. In a previous study of our group, two inclination angles associated with abnormal foot movement were calculated from acceleration and angular velocity obtained from inertial sensors, and range of healthy subjects was created by defining a two-dimensional plane with these two angles. However, the angles of healthy subjects during walking were unevenly distributed in the created healthy range. In this study, the relationship between the angle distribution and the stride length was analyzed, and finally the created healthy range was divided into three ranges based on stride length. Since the stride length of hemiplegic subject is generally shorter than that of healthy subject, the healthy ranges for different stride lengths are expected to be useful for the detection and evaluation of abnormal movements of hemiplegic subjects with different levels of paralysis.
