A Study of Programming Educational Tools for Children with Visual Impairment

(in English) In Japan, the programming education in elementary school will be compulsory from fiscal year 2020. It can be said that the targeted age of students shifts lower and lower. The main purpose of being compulsory is not to teach programming skills but to cultivate abilities of programming thinking. However, the guidebook published by MEXT(Ministry of Education,Culture,Sports,Science and Technology) encourages to use computers and introduces examples of using visual programming tools. This situation embarrasses visually impaired students who study in special schools for the blind or classes with special needs, because they have difficulty to use such kind of visual tools. Therefore, we propose a programming educational tool for children with visual impairment and make a study of the environment and contents in this paper. The proposed tool is based on Arduino and the programming environment can be operated with only a screen reader. The main advantage is that it can be brought to students’ home because of the low cost. In addition, we prepared an environment in which students do not need to press a large number of keys to make the operation easy.
