Evaluation of Throughput and Utilization Ratio of Transmission Rate

(in English) An ad hoc network using multi-hop communication by many terminals without through a base station has been attracted attention as an emergency communication system in case of disasters. Wireless LAN terminals in ad hoc mode may be used as terminals to construct the ad hoc network. Wireless LAN terminals based on IEEE802.11 standard can perform efficient communication by dynamically controlling multiple transmission rates (multi-rates) according to the radio wave conditions.
Here, the previous studies have evaluated the change of transmission rate and the throughput on the single hop of multi-rate wireless LAN environment. However, the characteristic evaluation on the multi-hop environment does not been conducted sufficiently.
Therefore, in this research, first, the transmission rate characteristics during multi-hop communication in a multi-rate environment were investigated by actual equipment experiments. Secondly, based on the results of the actual equipment experiments, the transmission rate characteristics and throughput according to the number of hops and the distance between hops in a multi-rate wireless LAN environment were investigated by simulation evaluation. Finally, we confirmed that the throughput can be improved by using the terminal with fixed transmission rate when other terminals uses multi-rate transmission.
