In order to examine the educational effect of presenting prosodic symbols to learners of Japanese, a method was proposed, where a training process of an end-to-end speech synthesizer was viewed as process of a human learner's learning Japanese prosody. By this method, different sets of prosodic symbols can be compared based on naturalness of synthetic voices. We consider that this method can give us some hints to discuss what kind of prosodic symbols will be more effective to be presented to learners. In this paper, two theories of Japanese prosody were focused on, which differ in how a given pitch pattern should be decomposed into accentuation and intonation. In textbooks, visualization of Japanese prosody is done on either of these models, resulting in somewhat different and confusing prosody visualization. In this paper, these theories were embodied using prosodic symbols used in training end-to-end speech synthesizers. Results of listening tests showed no significant difference between the two types of prosody generated based on the two theories. This implies that the theoretical differences may not affect acquired prosodic control at least in machine learning. This paper adds some educational discussion on the obtained results. |
