An Experimental Evaluation of Mode and Wavelength Switching using Weakly-coupled 10-Mode Division Multiplexed Network

(in English) Partial MIMO-based weakly-coupled few-mode fiber transmission system can not only suppress large MIMO processing but also increase the degree of freedom for channel assignment. This is because MIMO processing is not required to compensate for modal cross-talk (MXT) between non-degenerate modes and each individual channel can be assigned into linear polarization (LP-) modes as well as wavelengths in WDM system. In such a network architecture, individual LP-mode and wavelength can be optically switched. So far, we have experimentally evaluated the feasibility of such a switching operation, however the number of mode was limited to 6, and the evaluation for multi-hop transmission was only LP01/LP02. In this report, we experimentally evaluate a switching operation in the weakly-coupled 10 mode division multiplexed network testbed, consisting of a conventional WSS, low MXT mode multiplexer/demultiplexer, and weakly-coupled 10-mode fiber. The individual switching operations of both mode and wavelength has been successfully confirmed.
