A Consideration on a Backscattering Response Model for the Estimation of Underground Structures

(in English) Accidents such as the collapse of roads caused by cavities under the ground have become a problem. The radar technology has been developed to estimate the existence of underground cavities by irradiating electromagnetic waves from the surface and measuring the backscattering response. Assuming that the ground is a multilayer structure, an estimation method is studied that uses a mathematical model to calculate the backscattering response from the medium conditions of each layer. The internal structure of the ground is estimated by comparing the response of the mathematical model with the actual response. The key to this method is the construction of a model that can calculate the response easily and accurately. In this paper, we consider a model that easily calculates the backscatter response of a multilayer structure using the reflection and transmission coefficients at the interface of each layer, and examines the possibility of estimating the underground structure using the model.
