[Encouragement Talk] Performance Evaluation of Time-Schedule Calculation Methods for Low-Delay Streams

(in English) In industrial networks, Ethernet is known as the prevailing protocol due to its high capacity and cost effectiveness. These networks have a large number of streams with varying request delays and priorities multiplexed into a single network system. Scheduling to adjust the transfer time of the streams is known as a means to satisfy request delays, while a scheduling method for calculating appropriate time-slots according to the network configuration and stream characteristics has been previously proposed. However, since there is no queuing mechanism in the existing method, no solution is found in the case where scheduling is made possible by frame queuing. In our research, we developed a schedule calculation software that incorporates a queuing mechanism, and we compare the search performance of our method with the aforementioned for 20 randomly generated network topologies. As a result, we confirmed that the proposed method excels over the existing method for finding solutions where queuing was an inevitability. Although the proposed method is thorough, it requires large computational times. We therefore consider a criterion for using both methods, where the method is switched for networks that have multiple large End-to-End delay relative to the cycle time streams multiplexed on one switch output on the same port. In future work, we plan to investigate whether there exists criteria for more general networks.
