A graded-index type photonic crystal fiber (GI-PCF) with α-power air hole diameter distribution in radial direction operates as a multimode fiber (MMF), where a graded-index (GI) type effective index profile is obtained. One of the applications of MMF is a temperature/strain sensor based on intermodal interference in a structure in which single-mode fibers (SMFs) are spliced to the both ends of MMF (SMF-MMF-SMF structure). In this report, we proposed an SMF-MMF-SMF structure in which a GI-PCF and ordinary single-mode photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) were chosen as an MMF and SMFs, respectively. Transmission spectrum variations for the application of temperature variation or strain were theoretically clarified, and the applicability of the structure for temperature/strain sensors was studied. |
