A method was proposed for measuring the circumferential strain produced in general ring-shaped structures by fitting the model to the Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) observed distributedly in an optical fiber installed at the circumference of the ring-shaped structures, and the availability of the method was confirmed through numerical simulations. In this report, experiments are described, in which the strains produced in elliptical and square-shaped rings under concentrated and uniformly distributed loads, were measured from the BGS observed simulatively. In this simulation experiments, instead of the BGS under the spatial strain produced in these ring structures, the BGS under the temporal strain producing the BGS shape same as that by the spatial strain was observed at each strain measurement points. The experimental results showed that the circumferential strain can be measured with the relative error of approximately 1% to the range of the strain produced at the circumferences without depending on cross-sectional shapes of general ring-shaped structures and distributions of the load applied to them. |
