Molecular transistors have been studied for 50 years, however electrical contacts to a single-molecule have been the issue to overcome owing to difficulty of miniaturization technology. Here, we report operation of a single-molecule single-electron transistor (SM-SET) consisting of a carbon-bridged oligo(phenylenevinylene)6 (COPV6) molecular wire of 4.5 nm in length with rigid and planner structure, and our unique heteroepitaxial spherical (HS)-Au/Pt nanogap electrodes. The experimental Coulomb blockade and gate modulation are clearly observed, which agree well with theoretical results using the Orthodox model. The device structure is determined to one-side chemisorbed geometry, and its conduction mechanism is relied on SM-SET. The demonstrated SM-SET is a promising candidate for molecular-scale electronics. |
