Forest biomass is an important parameter to understand the global climate change because the forests play various roles in the earth environment such as the carbon and water cycle. Therefore, we need to continuously and rapidly monitor the forest biomass to understand the climate change. For this purpose, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is expected to be a powerful tool because of the ability to produce a high-resolution image of an area of interest in all-weather and day-and-night conditions. In this report, we discuss the effects of forest biomass on SAR imagery for the aim of the forest biomass estimation from the SAR image intensity. We propose an application of the tomographic SAR (TomoSAR) technique to isolate the backscattering from the trunk of a tree that is the major contributor of the forest biomass. We carried out a laboratory SAR experiment in an anechoic chamber, where the simplified forest model is employed to emulate a forested area. We show the validity of the TomoSAR to improve the sensitivity of the SAR image intensity with respect to the forest biomass variation. |
