A sparse and random sequence of 1 and -1 sounds like noise. Moreover, it sounds smoother than white Gaussian noise and called "velvet noise." The first encounter with the velvet noise was a keynote by Valimaki of the APSIPA ASC meeting in 2017. This encounter and following discussions with him started the following studies on velvet noise and its variants. They finally led to an unexpected invention of frequency domain variants of velvet noise (FVN). By exchanging the time and frequency axes of the original velvet noise generation and introducing a very smooth and localized function made from a cosine series, it defines FVN. A unit FVN sounds like a noise burst. However, FVN is not a truncated noise. Its power spectrum is a constant value irrespective of frequency, and convolution with the time-reversed version of the FVN yields a unit impulse. In other words, a unit FVN is a TSP on the broader definition. The ever-expanding applications of FVN include speech synthesis, acoustic measurement, psychoacoustics and physiology of hearing, interactions between speech production and perception. Applications of FVN are growing wider than our expectations. This article tries to organize FVN's history, related and underlying topics, backgrounds, and tries to foresee the future of FVN applications. |
