Fabrication of needle-shaped structure for achievement of LED probe to insert brain for optogenetics

(in English) Optogenetics is a powerful approach to uncover a link between neural activity and behavior. However, these studies require light delivery in complex patterns with cellular-scale resolution. Therefore, we challenged to make a novel silicon based microscale light emitting diode (LED) probe for optogenetics, which can activate neural activity to rodent’s brain. The fabrication of needle shape was achieved by reactive ion etching technique. In addition, it was confirmed that the light intensity of this micro LED satisfied the activation of neural cells. This result suggest that invasive micro LED probe would be useful tools for exploring new fields of optogenetics.
