An Experimental Study on Congestion Control for Multipath TCP and Conventional TCP

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Multipath TCP (MPTCP) defines its own congestion control algorithm called Linked Increase Adaptation (LIA). Since an increase of congestion window is based on TCP Reno in LIA, the performance of MPTCP connections might be degraded compared with high-speed TCP congestion control algorithms, such as CUBIC TCP. To improve the throughput of LIA, two modified congestion control algorithms called Opportunistic Linked Increase Algorithm (OLIA) and Balanced Linked Increase Algorithm (BALIA) are proposed. However, since these algorithms also follow TCP Reno, it is possible that their performance is degraded compared with high-speed congestion control algorithms. In this paper, we discuss the results of experimental performance evaluation in the configuration that MPTCP and conventional TCP share a congested link.
