A Study on Dependence between Performance Metrics of PUFs and the Number of Response Bits using PUF Numerical Model

(in English) Recently, performance metrics of Physically Unclonable Function (PUF) are discussed toward international standardization activities. Inter-Hamming distance (Inter-HD) is one of major performance metrics which represents the uniqueness of PUFs. The mean and standard deviation of Inter-HD are supposed to become constant values regardless the number of response bits for evaluation. A previous study reported that standard deviation of some PUFs increased with an increase of the number of response bit. However, the reason of the increase in standard deviation of Inter-HD is not well studied. In this paper, we generate numerical models of the Arbiter PUF and Ring-oscillator PUF and compare evaluation results using the numerical models with the measurement results. We conclude that the increase in standard deviation of Inter-HD is inherently caused by the structure of these PUFs.
