As the amount of data handled by applications increases every year, the demand for the larger capacity of main memory has been growing. Although DRAM has been used as main memory for a few decades, its capacity and cost are expected not to scale further due to physical limitations. Therefore, persistent memory (PM) that has a larger capacity with lower cost than DRAM is attracting a lot of attention in both industry and academia. PM is byte-addressable non-volatile memory that can sit on a memory bus and can retain data across power failures. A first PM product will be released in market soon, and we can expect a big change in main memory systems on future computer systems.
This talk will introduce the technology trends of PM. At first, it will describe the overview of PM and a first PM product called Intel® Optane™ DC Persistent. It will also present the performance characteristic of this PM product with experimental results shown in a paper published from University of California, San Diego. Moreover, it will introduce the use cases of PM proposed by several vendors and programming for utilizing the non-volatility of PM. |
