[Invited Talk] Efficiency of information processing in the brain: Information theoretic approach

(in English) Animals can survive because their brain processes information about the environment and transfer it to the nerve cells (i.e., neurons) that are responsible for recognition, decision making, and action. Therefore, for developing a reliable communication and control system, it is important to investigate how the neurons transfer information. Herein, we first summarize the information transfer process in the brain and its mathematical description. Then, we evaluate the efficacy of the information transfer in a single neuron or in a population of neurons by using information-theoretic techniques (Kostal & Kobayashi, BioSystems 2015; Kostal & Kobayashi, Phys Rev E (R) 2019). This work has been done in collaboration with Lubomir Kostal (Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic).
