(in English) This study discusses electromagnetic field (EMF) strength characteristics at a 4 GHz Wireless Avionics Intra-Communication (WAIC) band around an actual aircraft. Since aircraft radio altimeters and WAIC systems are operated at the same frequency band of 4.2–4.4 GHz, the spectrum sharing conditions of both systems need to be investigated. The electric field (E-field) strength, which is assumed to be radiated from the WAIC transmitters installed inside and outside of the cabin, is evaluated based on the international standards. Firstly, an E-field strength measurement set-up using Beechcraft B300 (King Air 350) aircraft at Sendai Airport is discussed. Next, three transmitting antenna locations are explained. Finally, discussion of the E-field strengths recorded at the different receiving antenna locations and showing typical radiation characteristics of the WAIC transmitters installed on the aircraft is covered. The results show that the height of the receiving antenna equal or closest to that of the transmitting antenna exhibits the highest total E-field strength in the three measurement conditions. In addition, the importance of measuring both polarizations to obtain the maximum total E-field strength is highlighted. This can be used for estimating the maximum transmitting power of the WAIC system in the future.
