Retinal motion or optical flow of an object (target) in the outer world is not generally identical to the motion of the object itself because the retinal motion is the sum of observer's self-motion and the target motion. Rushton {it et al.} (Current Biol., 2005) examined the properties of perceptual motion of targets by psychophysical experiments, and proposed the "flow-parsing hypothesis," which conjectured that human would decompose complex retinal motion into the optical flow by observer's self-motion and the target's motion. In those experiments, however, observable peripheral visual information was limited in a small angle of visual field,
and motion disparity by head movement of observers was eliminated.
In this study, we examine whether the flow-parsing hypothesis is applicable or not to various conditions of visual inputs by using Oculus Go (a stand-alone Head-mounted display) as a primary device for psychophysical experiments. Oculus Go provides virtual reality environment of $pm 50^{circ}$ visual angles approximately, and it does not eliminate motion disparity by observers' head rotation. We show that the flow-parsing hypothesis is partially acceptable in a limited visual condition, but it should be rejected in some conditions. |
