[Invited Lecture] Recent Technical Trends in IEEE 802.11 Standardization

(in English) This lecture presents recent technical trends of IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN (WLAN) standardization. First, all of active task groups (TGs) and their major techniques are briefly overviewed. Then, technical discussion and current status of some major TGs are presented. TGax (802.11ax) is standardizing the high efficiency wireless LAN (WLAN) at microwave frequency bands. 802.11ax adopts uplink/downlink orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDMA) and uplink/downlink multiuser multiple-input, multiple-output (MU-MIMO) to achieve high transmission efficiency in densely deployed use cases. In addition, 802.11ax additionally specifies management functions to operate wireless connection in 6 GHz bands to cope with recent regulatory update to allow unlicensed devices (typically, IEEE 802.11 WLANs) operation. TGay (802.11ay), is standardizing the second generation of millimeter-wave WLAN standard. 802.11ay utilizes channel bonding and spatial multiplexing to define more than 100 Gbps of physical layer bit rate. TGbc is specifying broadcast services over WLANs. TGbe is discussing technical features for the extreme high throughput WLANs, which is the next-generation of 802.11ax. Finally, the brief technical features and experimental evaluation results of 802.11ah are introduced. 802.11ah operates at sub-1GHz frequency band and assumes IoT application and use cases. The standardization of 802.11ah has been finished in 2016 and the commercial products will appear on near future.
