Degradation of Achievable Information Rate due to Phase Noise in Optical Coherent Systems

(in English) Achievable information rate (AIR) is perfect tool to evaluate the number of the reliably-transmitted information bits per symbol in coded modulation schemes. In the conventional coded modulation, so-called bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM), AIR is defined by generalized mutual information (GMI) of the binary data recovered from the received symbols through a demapper. In the multilevel coded modulation (MLCM), AIR is determined from mutual information (MI) of the received symbols. In the optical coherent system, the impairment due to the laser phase noise is inevitable. The remained phase fluctuation cannot be negligible even after carrier-phase estimation. In this work, we numerically calculate MI in the presence of laser phase noise for the 16, 64, and 256QAM constellation points. We point out that MI is remarkably degraded due to the residual phase fluctuation in the MLCM system with high-order QAM constellation.
