Composition of the digital spike maps based on SOM

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) A digital spike map (Dmap) is a simple digital dynamical system defined on a set of points. The
steady state of the Dmap must be a periodic orbit. Depending on parameters and initial conditions, the Dmap
can generate various periodic orbits. The Dmap is related to various nonlinear systems such as cellular automata,
digital spiking neurons, and dynamic binary neural networks. The applications include digital communications and
switching circuit control. In this paper, in order to construct a Dmap, we present a learning algorithm based on
the self-organizing feature map (SOM). As an input signal is applied, the learning algorithm updates the closest
element of the map and its neighbors by interpolation. Quantizing the map after the learning, we obtain a Dmap.
As a typical example of input signal, a chaotic signal generated from the bifurcating neuron is used. In order to
analyze the dynamics of the Dmap, we introduce two feature quantities. The first quantity characterizes the ratio
of periodic points. The second quantity characterizes the ratio of periodic orbits. Using the two feature quantities,
we analyze the behavior of typical Dmaps. The results provide basic information for analysis of nonlinear digital
dynamical systems and its engineering applications.
