A Study on High Precision Multiple-fiber Push-On Connector for Reference Connection Application

(in English) We developed single-mode multi-fiber push-on (MPO) connectors with splice losses below 0.2 dB for reference use in a standard optical cable attenuation test. To realize these connectors, we decided to adopt tighter tolerances for the fiber hole deviation and guide hole pitch in the mechanically transferrable (MT) ferrule. We also decided the criterion when selecting MPO connectors for reference use from connectors that employ precise MT ferrules. The valid criterion was that 3 male and female plugs whose splice losses in 12 channels should be below 0.2 dB in all 3 by 3 mating patterns. The MPO connectors that we fabricated using precise MT ferrules and selected according to the criterion performed well enough for reference use. The mean insertion loss was 0.07 dB and the appearance probability of the insertion losses below 0.2 dB was 99.1%. The fabricated MPO connectors show that the MT ferrule design with tighter tolerances and the selection criterion for MPO connectors are practical as regards producing an MPO connector for reference use.
