[Poster Presentation] Traffic jam mitigation by lane change restriction control through V2I communication in environments where autonomous cars and manual driving cars coexist

(in English) It is known that traffic congestions of bottlenecks such as sag section in highways get worse affected by lane changes of some cars which cause stronger brakes by their following cars. One of countermeasures to cope with such a situation would be installing a signboard on the roadside prompting drivers to avoid changing lanes. However, the drivers will not always follow the guide and also the signboard might not be visible from them depending on a weather. This paper assumes the future increase of autonomous driving cars equipped with wireless communication systems, and evaluates the effect of lane change restriction control by using V2I(Vehicle to Infrastructure) communication system. Results of traffic flow simulation in a two-lane highway model shows that restricting lane changes from a lane with lower traffic flow rate to the other lane with higher traffic flow rate is effective to avoid slow down in following cars and improve average velocity compared to a baseline scheme.
